Frequently asked questions about the Natures Pure Spa Program

Is the Natures Pure Spa Program chemical free?

There is no such thing as "chemical free" when it comes to pool and spa water care. Everything you put in the water is some type of chemical. What the program consists of are the two primary parts of every system which are the sanitizer and oxidizer, and two support products (energizer & mineralizer) designed to reduce the amount of sanitizer required. Sanitizers are required to prevent the bacteria in water from making you sick or causing an infection. There are only three approved by the FDA for hot tub use. Chlorine, bromine and biguanide. If your water treatment program does not contain one of these three sanitizers, it may not be completely safe to use. The Natures Pure Spa Program uses chlorine as the primary sanitizer.

What makes the Natures Pure Spa Program a reduced chemical system?

Since all programs require one of the same three sanitizers, (chlorine, bromine, biguanide) reducing the amount of sanitizer required means replacing it with wither another form of sanitization or enhancing the sanitizers ability to work better with less of it. This program accomplishes both of those goals with the Energizer and Mineralizer. Using both parts will allow you to use up to 80% less sanitizer making the chore of keeping your spa water clean and clear much easier.

Do I have to use all four parts of the program to achieve an 80% reduction?

The short answer is no. Parts 1 & 2 are the same Dichlor sanitizer and MPS oxidizer (shock) you may already be using now. Parts 3 & 4 are the "secret sauce" that reduce the sanitizer levels. You can continue to use your existing sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) and shock, then add the Natures Pure Spa mineralizer and energizer to achieve the reduction shown. Biguanide users can use the Natures Pure Spa Energizer to enhance the quality water and experience a softer, clearer spa but the sanitizer levels must be maintained per your instructions.

My spa uses a "salt system". Can this program accomplish the same for me?

YES! You may or may not realize it but your "salt system" simply generates either chlorine or bromine to sanitize the spa water. Regardless of how you get the sanitizer in the water, our system reduces the amount required.

How often do I need to check my water?

Regardless of how you take care of your spa you should test the water for proper sanitizer levels frequently. At a minimum, once per week should your goal with this program. The addition of parts 3 & 4 of our program "flatten out" the rollercoaster of high/low sanitizer levels experienced by most spa owners. If you are NOT using all four parts of the program we suggest testing more often. Keep in mind that proper sanitizer levels are the only thing preventing bacteria from causing water born illnesses.

How often should I "shock" my spa?

The amount of oxidizer (shock) required is a variable that no instruction book or bottle can tell you. Shock primarily removes bather waste. How much sweat, body oil, hair products, under arm deodorant and other stuff did you leave behind? The number of persons and the frequency they use the spa is yet another variable. A good starting point is 2oz per person per week and adjust as needed. If you experience cloudy water or foam, chances are you need to add more. If you experience clear water but some irritation, you may be adding too much. Many users find a simple routine such as adding a small amount after each use a successful treatment option.

How often do I need to change my spa water?

Using the complete four part program requires a drain and refill every four months. Mineral systems like Natures Pure Spa, FROG, Nature 2, Leisure Time and others will loose effectiveness after that and you will find the water more difficult to manage. The mineral cartridge portion of all these systems contain the same basic copper, silver and zinc and are designed to be active for four months after the cartridge gets wet.

My spa uses an ozonator. Do I still need to use the same chemicals?

Yes. Even though ozone is an effective oxidizer and will even destroy microorganisms directly exposed to the ozone, the ozone is relatively short lived in your hot tub water. As such the ozone is not present in the water for a sufficient length of time to assure adequate sanitation of the entire tub and the surfaces and plumbing.

I cant seem to control my pH. What can I do?

pH is "locked in" by one of two things. High Alkalinity Enough part 4, Energizer If you are not using our Natures Pure Spa Energizer, you may experience pH bounce. Our energizer formula will lock in your pH so that it will not fluctuate drastically. As a side benefit, it also makes your water feel softer and sparkle.

My spa is foaming, what should I do?

There are several reasons that a spa foams. A common cause is the rapidly moving water combined with bathers bringing in soaps and detergents on their bodies and bathing suits. Showering before entering the spa helps prevent this problem. If excess detergents are the cause of the foam, using a defoamer such as Natures Pure Spa Foam Out will reduce the amount of foaming temporarily. Another cause of foaming is soft water. This means that the calcium level in the water is low. This can be corrected by raising the calcium level to 150-400 ppm by using Natures Pure Spa Calcium Increaser. Organic waste build up can also cause foaming. By shocking the spa on a regular basis, the waste is oxidized out of the water and foaming is reduced.

Can I use soft water in my spa?

NO. Water that is low in calcium hardness can be corrosive to other metal parts in your spa, particularly your heater. We recommend maintaining a calcium hardness level of 150 – 400 ppm. Maintaining proper calcium hardness levels will also help reduce foaming.

My spa dealer says bromine is the only thing they recommend. Can I use it with this system?

Yes. Simply swap out part 1 of our system with your bromine. Part 2 of our system is the same non-chlorine MPS shock you are already using. Using parts 3 & 4 will allow you to reduce the amount of bromine required by up to 80%.

How do spa mineral water systems work?

Minerals such as copper, silver and zinc work together to allow you to use less sanitizer like chlorine or bromine. It's important to note that even drinking water contains chlorine to keep the water safe. Regardless of what anyone or any website tells you, you must use the correct amount of sanitizer to have safe water. The key phrase here is "correct amount". That will vary by what else you might be using to supplement the sanitizer. Without using supplemental minerals, the correct amount of chlorine or bromine is typically stated as 2-4 ppm by most authorities. When you use a mineral system such as FROG, Nature 2, Natures Pure Spa, Leisure Time or any other brand containing the correct copper, silver and zinc for spas, you can reduce the amount of sanitizer required by half. The Natures Pure Spa system goes a step further by introducing a water conditioner called sodium tetraborate. We call it Natures Pure Spa Energizer. This conditioner creates a synergy between the minerals, sanitizer and the water itself to allow for an additional 50% reduction in sanitizer use. The energizer component of our system can be used with any other sanitizer or system on the market today and it will enhance those systems the same way it works with ours. If you are currently using the FROG, Nature 2 or other mineral product, consider adding our Natures Pure Spa Energizer to enhance what you're already doing. It will make your water feel softer, lock in your pH to prevent drift and let you use less chlorine or bromine than you currently do. If you really want to do a deeper dive, the PHTA (Pool & Hot Tub Alliance) has a fact sheet on the topic. https://www.phta.org/pub/?id=71acca1f-1866-daac-99fb-41bdc9c456f6#:~:text=F.,C.

Where can I order the Natures Pure Spa water care system

You have two options, both at the top of this website. You can visit your local spa store that carries Natures Pure Spa products listed under "buy local". We recommend local stores to deliver the best experience and advice on how to maintain your particular spa water. All of these stores have water labs that can test your water and offer professional advice on maintaining the best water possible for your situation. You can also purchase products from the "Buy Online" tab above.

How to reduce skin irritation from hot tub chemicals?

Your skin is typically irritated from two sources. Improper water balance either too high or too low pH or alkalinity. Or the use of too many chemicals, too much chlorine, bromine or MPS shock. A third option might be old water, you haven't changed your spa water in more than six months and you are hot tubbing in chemical soup. Out of balance water is the most common irritant. Check your pH and alkalinity regularly. You can also add our Natures Pure Spa Energizer to lock in pH to prevent it from drifting between fills. Cutting back on the amount of MPS (non-chlorine shock) can also reduce irritation. Many dealers and care guides suggest adding some after each use which will certainly keep the water clean but at some point, you're just adding it for no good reason. MPS removes bather waste and frees up sanitizer. However it does not leave the water as rapidly as most sanitizers and you may not need as much as you think or have been told. Start by cutting the amount of MPS you use in half. If your water stays clean and clear, and the irritation goes away, problem solved. If the water stays clean and clear but you still have irritation, cut the amount in half again. Repeat until you get cloudy water. Then you have reduced by too much.

Where can I buy low-bromine spa chemicals?

You can lower your bromine usage by half or more with just one or two of our products. First our Natures Pure Spa Mineralizer will allow you to cut your bromine use by 50%. You can combine that with our Natures Pure Spa Energizer for an additional 50% reduction. Both can be found at the Buy Local or Buy Online tab.
